We are Roger and Lou and we both worked for IBM in Hampshire until
2001 when we left the rat race and move to rural west Wales and
bought our farm, some alpacas, some young ewes and a ram.
The pace of life here is much slower, which can be a bit frustrating
at times, but on the whole we wouldn't go back (though Rog misses
his golf).
We chose alpacas because they are graceful animals that supply
us with wonderful fibre which we sell for hand spinning.
The sheep were originally brought in to keep the grass under control,
as it would take a large herd of alpacas to eat it all!
Our original flock was of Beulah Speckle Face ewes, and later we
kept Llanwenogs. These are an attractive looking sheep with a rich
creamy fleece and black faces and legs. The breed name is taken
from the parish of Llanwenog which is only a few miles from us.
The Llanwenog breed has recently come off the rare breed list, and
numbers are slowly increasing as more people discover this docile
and prolific sheep. We are members of the Llanwenog
Sheep Society.
Over the past couple of years, Rog has had knee problems which
have made it more and more difficult to him to walk, let alone run
a small farm, so we sold the sheep and we are now offering the alpacas
for sale too.
